Bordeaux : UNESCO World Heritage

The City of Bordeaux and the Port of the Moon are registered since June 2007.

The Port of the Moon, port city of Bordeaux in South-West France, is inscribed as an inhabited historic city, an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble, created in the age of the Enlightenment, whose values continued up to the first half of the 20th century, with more protected buildings than any other French city except Paris.

It is also recognized for its historic role as a place of exchange of cultural values over more than 2,000 years, particularly since the 12th century due to commercial links with Britain and the Low Lands. Urban plans and architectural ensembles of the early 18th century onwards place the city as an outstanding example of innovative classical and neoclassical trends and give it an exceptional urban and architectural unity and coherence. Its urban form represents the success of philosophers who wanted to make towns into melting pots of humanism, universality and culture.

The City of Bordeaux has 347 listed buildings, referred to the law of 31 December 1913. The historic town is protected by the “Plan de sauvegarde et de mise en valeur” (PSMV), approved in 1988 and revised in 1998 and 2002. A buffer zone has been established. Management structures for the protection and conservation of the nominated property include the shared responsibilities of national, regional and local governments. Interventions on buildings declared Monuments historiques (classés) must have the support of the Ministry for Culture. Several plans ensure the management and conservation of the property and take into account the following aspects : preserving the historic and heritage character, allowing the controlled evolution of the historic centre, unifying the various planning rules and contributing to the international significance of metropolitan Bordeaux.

To discover all the treasures of the city, many conducted tours are organized such as :

- Unesco : Bordeaux World Heritage

From February to March you would enjoy the commented visit of the city and its monuments registered as Unesco World Heritage since June 2007. The tourist information office proposes you to discover it in a cabriolet bus every Saturday evening.

- Castles and Terroir : the great vineyards of Bordeaux

Discover vineyards, with a different AOC on Wednesday and Saturday. (For Saint Emilion, : visit of a Château and of the medieval city.)

Blaye/Bourg - Bordeaux/Entre-Deux-Mers - Saint Emilion - Médoc - Graves/Sauternes

The Bordeaux Wines

The widest vineyard in the world covers three different river axes.

The vastest vineyard in the world covers three different river axes.

- In the North - West : The Médoc

West from the Atlantic Ocean and East from the Gironde estuary, the area of Médoc runs over 80km. In the North of Bordeaux, the Wine route towards Pauillac and the Pointe de Graves leads to the finest terroirs and the most prestigious "Grands Crus Classés" (classification of 1855). The unusual architecture of the castles reveals the exceptional originality and personality of this region.

- In the East : Saint Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac.

Located on the right side of the Dordogne, the vines in this area enjoy a worldwide reputation. The castles are less imposing than those in Médoc, but the countryside is much greener. Vast expanses of vineyards alternate with Medieval and Roman monuments. The small town of Saint-Emilion, a UNESCO world heritage site and the elegant wines are worth the bend !

- In the North : Bourg and Blaye :

Bourg and Blaye are certainly the more friendly wine- growing regions in the area. They are both located on the right bank of the Gironde. You will be fascinated by the vines running over the estuary, the white stoned and troglodyte villages, the Roman churches, the famous archaeological sites and the small pleasant ports.

- In the South –West : Graves et Sauternes.

From the South of Bordeaux to Langon, west of La Garonne, the vines are sometimes hidden in the pine forest. Thanks to this natural protection the terroir produce remarkable wines. The blending of the variety results in AOC wines that are lively and harmonious, with good aromatic strength. The area also produces classified dry whites, known for their outstanding aromatic power.

- In the South –East : l’Entre-deux-Mers.

The largest wine-growing region in Bordeaux, the Entre-deux-Mers owes its name, literally “between two seas”, to the two rivers surrounding it, the Dordogne and the Garonne. A great variety of wines is produced here : fruity, lively reds ; clarets and rosés ; a wide variety of whites to be enjoyed while young and crisp ; a range of semi-sweet and sweet whites. The region invites visitors to travel through history by discovering fortified towns such as Créon and Sauveterre de Guyenne ; abbeys such as La Sauve Majeure ; and inspired places where artists such as Mauriac(Château de Malagar) and Toulouse Lautrec (Château de Malromé) lived.

The city of Bordeaux

Bordeaux benefits from a rich cultural and historic background inherited from the 18th century : The Royal Place, the Grand Theatre, The Tourny Boulevard. The quality of their architecture and their urban reality place them among the most interesting monuments and sites in Europe.

Once reached the heart of the city you will certainly fall under the charm of this river and you won’t miss a nice walk along the newly built banks.

Beautiful and sunny, Bordeaux makes its way through the 21st century with determination and a new spirit. The city is concluding a revised urban project that, along with a new economic cultural and social development, will bring back the pleasure of leaving in town.

Bordeaux puts every day a challenge into different domains. First, into the cultural scene as it participates directly to the individual development and carries the image of the city.

The airport, the European station, the connecting highway, the port on the Atlantic, they all give Bordeaux an important opening towards the world. Bordeaux is also known for the optic domain and for the laser application, as well as for the Space Science and Aeronautics.

The city also counts with a reach international trading and exchange. Capital of wine producers, Bordeaux embraces the traditional and the new technology.

A sanctuary took the place of the ancient chapel and became the central point of the pilgrimage. Thousands of miracles have taken place since that time, 66 of which have been declared authentic by a special commission.

Bernadette Soubirous died in Nevers in 1878 and was canonized in 1933.

Strasbourg and the typical Alsacian gastronomy

An all-consuming passion !!!

Some Alsatian specialties you cannot miss to taste !!!

- The Sauerkraut : the most famous traditional dish. It is prepared cabbage with sausages and regional pork-butchery with the knuckle of ham, the Strasbourg sausages, and other salted chests of pig. It’s a real treat, appreciate it with a good local beer.

- Goose Foie Gras : with fine and delicate savour, it has the favours of the gourmet. Foie gras is one of the most popular and well-known delicacies in French cuisine. Its flavour is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of a regular duck or goose liver. Foie gras can be sold whole, or prepared into mousse, parfait, or pâté and is typically served as an accompaniment to another food item, such as toast or steak.

- Kugelhopf : The famous alsacian cake’s ! The cake’s name means “risen ball”. At any rate, the current shape of the Kugelhopf (a circular, bulging mould with ribs that make it easy to share out into portions) is rather recent. The Kugelhopf can be soaked in Beer Brandy with “Berawecka” Fruits and Beer Sorbet.

- Flammekuche : the Alsatian-style pizza. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the "tarte flambée" was made in the Kochersberg region for the lunchtime meal. This rectangle of bread dough, topped with cream, onions and bacon, is very popular today. But for a long time, this Alsatian dish was not well known, because it was only made by people who had bread ovens. In the olden days, the first flames that burned when the oven was started up were used for making the tart. This is where the name “flame tart” comes from, becoming “tarte flambée” in French.

- Pretzels : the symbol of traditional Alsatian baking. Some say that pretzels, which are truly emblematic of traditional Alsatian baking, were invented by a baker from Ingwiller. Some say that this baker, who was much loved by the villagers, had a weakness that landed him in prison : swearing repeatedly against the lord. In exchange for his freedom, the lord asked him to invent a cake in which he would be able to see the shape of the sun three times. And thus the pretzel was born. This crunchy biscuit, made from dough poached in water, is very popular.

- Munster cheese : manufactured on the Alsacian and Lorraine faces of the Vosges, it is a AOC product. Often known for its strong smell, it is above all a delicious dish especially with a powerfull red wine.

Come and taste all these very tasty dishes in a region with a lot of charm !

Strasbourg the European Capital

New York, Geneva and Strasbourg are the only cities in the world which are home to international institutions without being national capitals

The choice of Strasbourg as the European capital following the Second World War is no accident. The city stands as a shining symbol of reconciliation between peoples and of the future of Europe. Discovering Europe’s institutions is also a great opportunity to admire some marvellous examples of contemporary architecture.

Ever since it was founded in 1949, the purpose of the Council of Europe has been to bring together all of the democracies of the old continent. Currently 47 member states representing a combined population of approximately 800 million people are members of this "club" for multi-party democracies, whose priorities are the protection of human rights but also social affairs, education, culture and the environment.

- The Human rights building

Built based on the plans of the British architect Sir Richard Rogers, the joint designer of the Beaubourg Centre in Paris, the Human Rights Building was opened in 1995 and houses the European Court of Human Rights.

Programmes of specialised conferences can be proposed for guests with an awareness of, and interest in human rights issues (minimum 15 people).

- The European Parliament

Its 750-seat debating chamber, completed in 1999, is designed to host this institution’s monthly sessions. The architecture of the building designed by Architecture Studio Europe is based on a combination of circles and ellipse, with the Parliament building being organised into several clearly identified areas :

    • A wing shaped building. From this "wing" emerges the dome of the hemicycle debating chamber, designed for 750 MEPs,
    • A 60 m high tower including 17 floors and 1 133 offices,
    • Work place, communication and social areas.

The building has three internal "streets", with the main one featuring a winter garden including a forest of philodendrons.
