Lourdes, city of pilgrimage
the Pilgrimage to Lourdes began in 1858
the Pilgrimage to Lourdes began in 1858 following to the 18 Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to poor girl Bernadette Soubirous.
After an accurate investigation, the Catholic Church has acknowledged the Apparitions. A statue of Notre-Dame de Lourdes was built in 1864. A sanctuary took the place of the ancient chapel and became the central point of the pilgrimage. Thousands of miracles have taken place since that time, 66 of which have been declared authentic by a special commission.
Bernadette Soubirous died in Nevers in 1878 and was canonized in 1933.
Lourdes receives millions of visits every year.
